Are Veneers the Right Choice for Your Smile?
Veneers are not the answer to every smile concern, and the fastest way to a good result is an honest look at how well they fit yours. Dr. Patterson Shedd starts there with Blossomwood patients: an exam that tells you plainly which tool fits, veneers, whitening, or Invisalign for what you want to change.
Veneers are thin, custom covers bonded to the front of your teeth, made from porcelain or tooth-colored resin.
Who Veneers Suit Well
Veneers fit you when your teeth and gums are healthy and the concern is cosmetic: deep staining that whitening cannot lift, small gaps, a chipped or worn edge, a tooth that is too small, or minor crookedness. If several of those apply at once, veneers solve them together, which is why patients wanting a fuller change often land here.
Who Should Consider Something Else First
If you have active decay or gum disease, Dr. Shedd treats that before any veneer. If your teeth are significantly misaligned, Invisalign is usually the better and more conservative route, and he will tell you so rather than mask the alignment with porcelain. Heavy grinders can still get veneers but need a night guard to protect them.
The Procedure, Briefly
Resin veneers can be placed in one visit, shaped and cured chairside. Porcelain veneers take two visits, one to prepare and scan and one to bond the lab-crafted shells. Porcelain resists stains, so the brightness holds. Expect mild cold sensitivity for a few days after prep.
Meet Dr. Patterson Shedd
Sound judgment about who needs what comes from a full education. Dr. Shedd graduated from St. Paul's Episcopal School in Mobile in 1999, earned a biological psychology degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 2003, and completed his D.M.D. at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2008. That grounding in how people think and heal shapes the candid candidacy conversations Blossomwood patients have with him before any veneer work begins.
He moved to Huntsville in 2010, where he lives with his wife Tinsley and their three daughters. Outside the practice, he plays golf and guitar, exercises, reads, and travels with his family.

Blossomwood Patient Questions
How do I know if I need veneers or just whitening?
A: If your only concern is color and your teeth are otherwise sound, whitening may be enough and costs less. Veneers make sense when you also want to fix shape, gaps, or chips. Dr. Shedd tells you which fits at your exam rather than defaulting to the pricier option.
Blossomwood has a lot of longtime residents. Can veneers help teeth that have worn down over decades?
A: Yes. Veneers restore shape and length to worn teeth, which is common in older smiles. Dr. Shedd checks the health of the underlying teeth first, then designs veneers that rebuild the look while protecting what is there.
I have an old bonded front tooth that keeps staining. Would a veneer be better?
A: Often, yes. Unlike bonding, porcelain resists staining, so a veneer holds its color far longer. Dr. Shedd can replace discolored bonding with a veneer that matches your surrounding teeth.
Is the office close enough for the two porcelain visits from central Blossomwood?
A: Yes. Blossomwood is about ten minutes away, so two visits are easy to fit in. Parking sits directly outside Suite 130, so each trip is quick from car to chair.
What if I'm not a good candidate for veneers?
A: Dr. Shedd will tell you directly and explain the better option, be it whitening, Invisalign, or treating a health issue first. An honest no now saves you from a result that would not last.
