Nervous About Changing Your Teeth? Start Here

The most common worry people from Owens Cross Roads bring to a veneers consult is simple: they are afraid of ending up with a smile that looks fake or feels wrong. That fear keeps a lot of good candidates in the waiting room for years. Dr. Patterson Shedd handles it by designing with you, not at you. He shows you the proposed shape and shade first, and nothing gets prepped until you are comfortable with the plan.

Veneers are thin, custom covers bonded to the front of your teeth. In porcelain or tooth-colored resin, they correct color, shape, and small gaps while looking like your own enamel.

What a Veneer Actually Does

A veneer covers the visible front of a tooth, so it changes what people see without touching the back. Dr. Shedd uses veneers to lighten deep staining that whitening cannot reach, close small gaps, reshape a tooth that is too small or worn, and even out a slightly crooked edge. Porcelain resists stains, so coffee and tea will not dull the result the way they can with older bonding.

Because each veneer is designed for your face and your bite, the finished set reads as natural. He helps you pick a shade that looks bright without crossing into obvious.

Who Should and Should Not Get Veneers

You are a strong candidate when your teeth and gums are healthy and the concern is cosmetic. If Dr. Shedd finds decay or gum inflammation, he treats that first, since a veneer bonded over an untreated problem fails early. Heavy grinders need a night guard to protect the porcelain. If your teeth are badly misaligned, he will tell you honestly that orthodontics, not veneers, is the better route.

During Treatment and Afterward

Resin veneers can be shaped and bonded in a single visit. Porcelain veneers take two: a first visit to prepare the teeth and take a digital scan, and a second to bond the lab-made shells. You may notice mild cold sensitivity for a few days after prep, which settles. Once bonded, you brush and floss normally and keep up routine cleanings to protect the edges.

Meet Dr. Patterson Shedd

For patients who arrive uneasy about cosmetic work, Dr. Shedd's early career tends to reassure. Before he opened his Huntsville practice, he spent a post-residency year in Mobile treating an underserved community, much of it children, work that rewards patience over speed. That temperament carries into his veneer consults, where he would rather slow down than rush a design.

A Mobile native, Dr. Shedd earned a biological psychology degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 2003 and his D.M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2008. He and his wife Tinsley are raising three daughters in the Huntsville area, and off-hours he is usually on a golf course or playing guitar.

Owens Cross Roads Patient Questions

I'm worried veneers will look obviously fake. How do you prevent that?

A: Dr. Shedd designs the shape and shade to match your face and your natural teeth, and he shows you the plan before any prep. The goal is a bright but believable result, and porcelain reflects light much like natural enamel.

Owens Cross Roads keeps adding new subdivisions. Are you taking new patients from here?

A: Yes, the practice is accepting new patients, and we see many families from the newer Owens Cross Roads builds. The first veneer visit is a consult and exam, so you can learn your options before committing.

The drive over the mountain is a haul. How many trips will veneers take?

A: Resin veneers can finish in one visit. Porcelain veneers take two, a prep-and-scan visit and a bonding visit. Ask the front desk to pair your consult with other work so you make fewer drives over Cecil Ashburn.

I don't have dental insurance. Can I still afford veneers?

A: Cosmetic veneers are usually elective, so many plans do not cover them, but we offer an in-house savings plan and 0% financing to spread the cost. Start with the $199 new-patient exam so Dr. Shedd can quote your case accurately.

How long will my veneers last before they need redoing?

A: Porcelain veneers hold up for years with routine cleanings and good home care. A night guard protects them if you grind, and Dr. Shedd checks their fit and edges at each visit so small issues get caught early.
