Veneers That Fit Around a Hospital Schedule

Medical District staff run on shifts that do not match a nine-to-five dental office. The Cecil Ashburn practice opens at 7:00 a.m. on Thursdays and keeps a free lot right outside the door, so fitting veneer visits around rounds and rotations is realistic. For people who spend their days caring for others, that access matters more than a longer menu of services.

Veneers are thin, custom covers bonded to the front of your teeth, designed in porcelain or resin to match your smile.

What Veneers Do

Dr. Patterson Shedd uses veneers to lighten deep staining, close small gaps, reshape teeth that are worn or too small, and repair chips and cracks. Porcelain resists staining, so long shifts fueled by coffee will not dull the result. One treatment covers several concerns at once.

Fitting the Visits Into Your Week

Resin veneers can be placed in a single visit. Porcelain veneers take two: a prep-and-scan appointment and a bonding appointment. The early Thursday hours and the quick fifteen-to-twenty-minute drive over from the hospital corridor make both visits easier to schedule around clinical work.

Who Is a Candidate

Healthy teeth and gums make you a candidate. Dr. Shedd treats decay or gum disease first. If you clench or grind, common under stress, he adds a night guard to protect the porcelain. Significant misalignment may call for Invisalign before veneers.

During and After Treatment

Expect mild cold sensitivity for a few days after porcelain prep, which fades. Once the veneers are bonded, you care for them like natural teeth: brushing, flossing, and routine cleanings. Dr. Shedd gives you a direct line for questions during the process.

Meet Dr. Patterson Shedd

Medical professionals tend to appreciate a dentist who understands hospital medicine. Dr. Shedd completed his residency at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, caring for inpatient and outpatient veterans with multiple medical concerns. That background makes him comfortable coordinating cosmetic work around the health conditions and medications that Medical District patients often manage themselves.

He earned his D.M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2008 after growing up in Mobile and studying at Birmingham-Southern College. Since 2010 he has lived in Huntsville with his wife Tinsley and their three daughters, filling his free time with golf, guitar, and Alabama football.

Getting Here From the Medical District

From the Huntsville Hospital area near Sivley Road and Gallatin Street, take Governors Drive east, then turn south onto Whitesburg Drive. Continue south and turn east onto Cecil Ashburn Drive, where 2124 Cecil Ashburn Drive SE, Suite 130, sits on the right before the mountain climb. The drive runs about fifteen to twenty minutes. Unlike the hospital parking decks, the office has a free lot directly outside the entrance.

Medical District Patient Questions

I work rotating shifts at the hospital. Can veneer visits flex around that?

A: The office opens at 7:00 a.m. Thursdays and runs to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, which helps staff on rotating schedules. Call (256) 407-3882 and the team will slot your prep and bonding visits around your shifts.

Is parking as difficult as the hospital decks?

A: No. The office has a free dedicated lot directly outside Suite 130, with no decks, meters, or permits. After the short drive over, you park a few steps from the door.

I take medications for a chronic condition. Does that affect getting veneers?

A: Usually not, but Dr. Shedd reviews your health history first. His VA residency prepared him to coordinate dental work around medications and medical conditions, so tell the team what you manage and they will plan around it.

Will veneers hold up under bright clinical lighting?

A: Yes. Dr. Shedd chooses a shade that looks bright and natural, and porcelain reflects light like natural enamel, so veneers read well even under harsh lighting. He confirms the shade in your natural light before bonding.

How soon before an event should I start if I want porcelain veneers?

A: Because porcelain takes two visits with lab time in between, plan several weeks ahead of an important date. If your timeline is tight, resin veneers can finish in one visit, and Dr. Shedd will tell you which is realistic.
