What Happens, From First Scan to Final Polish
If you like knowing exactly what a procedure involves before you book it, veneers are easy to map out. In Jones Valley, the process starts with an exam and a conversation about the result you want. From there, the steps depend on which material you choose, resin or porcelain.
Veneers are thin covers bonded to the front of your teeth, made from porcelain or tooth-colored resin and designed to match your smile.
The Porcelain Sequence, Visit by Visit
Visit one: Dr. Shedd lightly prepares the front surface of the teeth, takes a digital scan, and fits temporaries. The lab builds your custom porcelain shells to the shape and shade you approved. Visit two: he checks the fit, confirms the color in your natural light, then bonds each veneer and polishes the margins so they disappear against the gum line.
Resin veneers compress this into one visit, since Dr. Shedd shapes and cures the tooth-colored material chairside.
How Veneers Fix Different Problems
The same procedure solves several concerns. Porcelain covers deep discoloration that whitening cannot lift. It closes small gaps between teeth, reshapes a tooth that is worn or too small, and evens a chipped or slightly crooked edge. Because porcelain resists staining, the brightness holds against coffee and tea.
Are You a Candidate
Veneers suit you when your gums and underlying teeth are healthy and the issue is appearance. Dr. Shedd treats any decay or gum disease first. Severe crowding is better handled with Invisalign before or instead of veneers, and he will say so. If you grind at night, he adds a guard to protect the porcelain.
Meet Dr. Patterson Shedd
Precision work suits a dentist trained to handle complexity. After earning his D.M.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2008, Dr. Shedd completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center, treating veterans with multiple medical concerns. That residency sharpened the careful, methodical approach he brings to each veneer case in Jones Valley, where the practice already lists him as the neighborhood dentist.
He grew up in Mobile, studied biological psychology at Birmingham-Southern College, and settled in Huntsville in 2010 with his wife Tinsley. They have three daughters. When he is not in the operatory he plays golf and guitar and follows Alabama football.

Jones Valley Patient Questions
Do you make the veneers in-house or send scans to a lab?
A: Dr. Shedd takes a digital scan in the office, then a dental lab crafts your porcelain veneers to the approved shape and shade. Resin veneers are shaped chairside in a single visit, so those do not need a lab turnaround.
I live near Jones Valley Elementary. How quick is the drive for two porcelain visits?
A: From that area you reach the office in about five to ten minutes, so two visits are easy to schedule close to home. Jones Valley sits on the same side of the mountain, so you avoid the cross-town commute.
Will the prep for porcelain veneers hurt?
A: Prep is minimal and usually comfortable, and Dr. Shedd numbs the area if needed. Some patients feel brief cold sensitivity for a few days afterward while wearing temporaries, and that settles once the final veneers are bonded.
Can veneers fix one chipped front tooth, or do I need a full set?
A: You can treat a single tooth. Dr. Shedd matches the shade and shape of one veneer to your surrounding teeth so it disappears against them. Many Jones Valley patients start with one or two teeth rather than a full smile design.
How do I keep veneers looking good long-term?
A: Brush and floss normally, keep up routine cleanings, and avoid using your front teeth to bite hard objects. Porcelain resists stains, so your result stays bright, and a night guard protects the veneers if you grind.
